The Aberfan disaster was the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip at around am on 21 November The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, and overlaid a natural spring. A period of heavy rain led to a build-up of water within the tip which caused it to suddenly slide downhill as a slurry, killing children and 28 adults as it engulfed Coordinates: 51°41′41″N 3°20′51″W / . A landslide is the rapid mass movement of soil, mud and/or rocks downhill due to the pull of gravity. Landslides are very common and occur in a variety of forms. Land may topple off in a big chunk, or slip down in bits. Landslide may be composed of mud or may contain rocks and other debris. Most landslides occur gradually, but some may be sudden.

Slope instability is a significant environmental hazard in North-East Wales, Author: S. A. Miller, M. Degg.

Cambridge Core - Geomorphology and Physical Geography - Landslides - edited by John J. Clague. This was a prescient act as the rainfall duly triggered extensive flooding and a number of significant landslides. South Wales is a landslide prone environment – the Welsh Valleys have many natural landslides and, of course, many more that are a legacy of the mining coal mining that so dominated this area for many decades.
